I have been designing, selling and installing consumer electronics for the past ten years and much has changed. It’s a very unbalanced system. Like the economy, cost is going up and profits are going down. But, in consumer electronics we have seen cost, reliability and build quality all take a tumble.
Back six years ago, a good DVD player with a nice video possessor from DVDO would set you back about $299.99 and that was the entry level player. A top-end player with Faroudja scalier and 3:2 pull down went for about $699.99. They were heavy, had great build quality and most of all, reliable. Today a top-end blu-ray player from a named manufacturer with Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora Radio, DLNA and WiFi goes for $149.99 and we are suppose to be happy if it lasts one to two years. Something does not sound right here?
As an owner of a consumer electronics installation company, my main goal is to sell and install equipment that will give you what you are looking for and more, but mainly reliable and a product that will last. Today it’s hard to find the manufactures that base their sales on reliability, not cost.
So when you’re in the market for consumer electronics gear that will be a main staple in your home or business, ask yourself if you are looking for something that will last or just get you by.
